  • What areas of life and research can Betulin be used for?

  • Several functions of Betulin.

What is Betulin?

Betulin is a lupin-type pentacyclic triterpenoid composed of 6 isoprenes. Molecular formula is C30H50O2, relative molecular mass 442.72, white crystalline powder, melting point 252-253℃, soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform and benzene, slightly soluble in cold water, petroleum ether and other organic solvents. Lowit first reported the substance in birch bark in 1788 and isolated it.

The botanical source is birch bark extract. Betulin has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, inhibiting protein dissolution in hair fiber, improving damaged hair luster, promoting hair growth and other activities, and can be used in food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

What areas of life and research can Betulin be used for?

Betulin has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, inhibiting protein dissolution in hair fiber, improving damaged hair luster, promoting hair growth and other activities, and can be used in food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

1.Pharmaceutical industry: Betulin is mainly used as a pharmaceutical intermediate, and betulin and its derivatives have shown great potential in HIV and cancer treatment as biological agents. At the same time, it is used to relieve cough and expectorant, treat allergic rhinitis, insomnia, depression, etc.

2.Food industry: There are studies using it as a preservative in meat products.

3.Cosmetics industry: The inhibition of collagenase activity and the proliferation of skin cells by betulin shows that it has a strong anti-aging effect and can be used to condition the skin, smooth the skin, and prevent chapped. It is also a good external penetration aid.

4.Daily chemical industry: In hair products, birch brain can reduce protein dissolution in hair fibers, improve the luster of damaged hair, and promote hair growth

Several functions of Betulin.

1. Lower blood lipids

Betulin has good pharmacological effects in anti-hyperlipidemia, and can reduce blood cholesterol and triacylglycerol at the same time. In addition, it can also inhibit the function of cholesterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP), thereby affecting the metabolism of cholesterol, significantly reducing the levels of triglycerides, fatty acids and cholesterol in the blood, and improving hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance in obese patients. The treatment effect of type diabetes is obvious.

2. Hepatoprotective effect

Betulin has a certain therapeutic effect on alcoholic fatty liver disease in rats. It can significantly improve the fatty degeneration and necrosis of liver tissue caused by alcohol, inhibit the damage of alcohol-induced lipid peroxidation on liver tissue, and have a good effect on alcoholic liver disease. Injury is better treated.

3. Inhibit melanin formation

Betulin can be used as a natural, safe, and side-effect-free traditional Chinese medicine phytoestrogen. It inhibits melanin synthesis in A375 cells through the p38-MAPK signaling pathway, reduces skin hyperpigmentation, and improves the impact of chloasma on the appearance of patients. Affected by side effects, lower incidence of uterine and breast cancer.

4. Anti-cancer and anti-tumor effect

Betulin has been shown to inhibit several types of cancer cells, including RCC4, DLD-1, PC-3, HeLa, SK-HEP-1, HepG2, A549 and MCF-7 cells, as well as cervical cancer cell line. It promotes tumor cell apoptosis by inducing apoptosis-related mitochondrial pathways and exerts anti-tumor activity. Recently, some scholars found that betulin can inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis of gastric cancer MGC-803 cells, and its mechanism of action may be related to the inhibition of PI3K/AKT pathway activation
